My distributive is xubuntu 16.04.

After update to the 4.15.x kernel my system cannot boot. It freezes after grub menu. I tried to boot recovery mode and saw kernel panic. Now my system can boot only on 4.13.x kernel.

The bug exists in upstream (tested v4.18-rc6 and v4.18-rc5).

Kernel bisection was done.
The bad commit is:
[7744ccdbc16f0ac4adae21b3678af93775b3a386] x86/mm: Add Secure Memory Encryption (SME) support.

I'm sorry. I did not searching for BIOS updates well.
This solution work for me too.
