Cannot boot Linux kernel on a new laptop Acer Nitro AN515-51 without acpi=off.

Tests on (then) upstream kernel (4.15.0-041500rc1-generic using ukuu tool):
<none>: reboots
acpi=off: works without ACPI info
acpi=ht: reboots
pci=noacpi: freezes after kernel loading
acpi=noirq: freezes after kernel loading
pnpacpi=off: freezes after kernel loading
noapic: reboots
nolapic: boots, shows kernel messages and then freezes

Since there is no info in sysfs, `sudo fwts acpidump` info is here: https://launchpadlibrarian.net/347518257/results.log

dmidecode output is in attachment.

If needed, I can test.

have you tried any kernel earlier than 4.13? say 4.12?
Comment 2 Zhang Rui 2017-12-18 05:57:04 UTC
the symptom looks similar to a problem on my laptop, which is a 4.13 regression, so it's better for you to check 4.12 kernel.

I have a similar problem with a Dell Optiplex 960. It boots fine with 4.10, but not 4.13. The system reboots in the middle without a log message. I managed to capture console output via serial with earlyprink=serial,ttyS0 (see attachment).

I initially though it was a BIOS issue (the computer had a very old A03), so I updated to the latest (A17).

The system boots fine with 4.11 and 4.12. But without acpi=off, it will not boot.

Comment 5 pladow 2018-01-18 21:26:41 UTC
As a followup, I tried 4.14, and it too fails.
Comment 6 pladow 2018-01-18 21:28:29 UTC
Finally, acpi=off works with 4.13 and 4.14.

I am affected as well: cannot boot from kernels 4.13.0-26 and 4.13.0-31 even when acpi=off. Reverted to 4.10.0-42.
Lubuntu 16.04 32 bit on Intel NUC 5PPYH.
Comment 9 Zhang Rui 2018-04-02 01:47:16 UTC
please check in the working kernel, does the system boot with boot option nolapic_timer?
