This is still happening in 2.6.36-rc7-git2

Hack to avoid black screen

This is my patch I'm trying to avoid black screen after resume with EIR bug.

I've bisected on my machine problem with workqueue merge -
991ea75cb1df7188d209274b3d51c105b4f18ffe.

Maybe it also could help with this ?

NOTE - I'm far to say it's bug fix - it most probably a hack - but should help to discover real bug.

Ok - my patch does not help here - it just took few more suspend/resume cycles to see this bug again.

But - after looking into the code - I've tried to add modprobe option:

options drm_kms_helper poll=0

And it seems to already survive more test cycles - though it's probably hard to say now whether it makes this problem disappeared.
Comment 4 Florian Mickler 2010-11-16 14:37:32 UTC
Is this still present in 2.6.37-rc2 or 2.6.36.y?
Comment 5 Zdenek Kabelac 2010-11-19 19:49:55 UTC
So - I've been 'almost' convinced the problem was fixed - as it's not longer so easily triggerable by several suspend-resumes cycles - so I've waited and used for few days - and today again - after resume I've got this error:

page table error
  PGTBL_ER: 0x00000100
[drm:i915_report_and_clear_eir] *ERROR* EIR stuck: 0x00000010, masking

Also I'd like to note - that i.e. this time resume gave me 'interesting' hw graphical error - hard to explain - something like colorfull fog has been visible on disable in this moment (it's not the first time - but it's probably worth to mentions it's not always 'black' screen)

So - there is some change with -rc2 as it's not so easily trigerable as with plain 2.6.36 - on the other hand it's now even harder to tell if the bug is still there or not - I expectect it's not really good for hw to repeat this suspend resume tortures - so I'd like to see some commit which is supposed to fix this problem before I'll do another test retry - for now I'm again disabling poll thread to get reliable resume which seems to be rock solid.

Someone should closely inspect what is kms helper thread doing and how is ensured exclusivity on gpu access and how the thread wakup order influences this process.
Comment 6 Ming-Ching Tiew 2011-01-26 15:04:23 UTC
I ***ALWAYS*** get that when my computer boots up using kernel 2.6.36.3 and 2.6.37. Kernel module parameters drm_kms_helper.poll=0 didnot help at all. I don't know what else to provide to help solve this problem. This is bugging me a lot. I have intermittent suspend-to-ram problem on my computer, which sometimes will hang/block. I suspect it's related to the intel graphics thingie.
Comment 7 Florian Mickler 2011-03-29 21:54:24 UTC
Is this still a problem on 2.6.38.y ?
Comment 8 Zdenek Kabelac 2011-03-29 22:12:34 UTC
As from me - I'm now currently using todays build of 2.6.39 pre-rc kernel - and in fact I've been planning to add a video of resume problem I've.

I do not get this EIR stuck: message - however the 'plasma' I've been seeing very occasionally before is now far more often - and disable drm_kms_helper thread seems to no longer help or make any difference.

This happens to me with kernel 3.0.4. I don't know that I have any problems other than that the screen doesn't unblank on keyboard or mouse input, a problem that precedes this error.

Does this still occur? We've fixed a few of those EIR issues in more recent kernels, but I'm not sure about them in pre-Ironlake chipsets...
Comment 13 Zdenek Kabelac 2012-04-19 10:20:59 UTC
For me - I'm long time user of 3.3 kernel - and I do not experience such problems nowadays nor any plasma effect after resume if that helps anyone...
Comment 14 Jesse Barnes 2012-04-19 15:18:57 UTC
I'm ever the optimist. :)

Robert, Russell and others, please re-open if this is still an issue for you, preferably at bugs.freedesktop.org since some of the issues might be Mesa related.
Comment 15 russell bell 2012-04-19 17:29:26 UTC
This still happens for me. I'm on kernel 3.3.2. As near as I can tell I have no other symptoms. The blanking problem I mentioned is separate.
Comment 16 Jesse Barnes 2012-04-19 17:36:44 UTC
Thanks for confirming russell. Can you file a new bug at bugs.freedesktop.org with the output from intel_gpu_dump attached along with the rest of the info requested at http://intellinuxgraphics.org/how_to_report_bug.html ?

Thanks,
Jesse
Comment 17 Daniel Vetter 2012-04-19 17:41:31 UTC
Clarification: We need i915_error_state from debugfs, intel_gpu_dump is outdated and removed from the latest release of intel-gpu-tools.
