Let's forget about the iPod and concentrate on the hard disk for now.
What happens when you try to connect and mount it? Can you provide the
dmesg log? To get more information, you should build a kernel with
CONFIG_USB_DEBUG enabled.

Sorry for the delay. I am attaching the syslog when I connect the
external hdd. I am also attaching the syslog under the kernel 2.6.21.
FWIW, I am also attaching the syslog when I connected the ipod under
2.6.24.

You're getting lots of disconnect events. It could be a power supply
problem, or a problem in the cable connections, or a problem in the
computer's USB controller, or a problem in the devices themselves.

Do the disk drive and the iPod work okay when you plug them into a
different computer? Have you tried using different USB ports? Have
you checked the cables inside the computer case? Have you tried using
different external USB cables?

Yes, I have tried it on 3 different machines with identical results. I
also did change the ports to which the devices are plugged and ended up
with the same result. I will once again try changing the cables and see
what happens.

Assuming that the cable/port are at fault, how come my card reader and
pendrive work on the same setup?

If you get the same results on several different computers, that indicates the problem most likely isn't in the computer. It could be in the cables, but if your card reader and pendrive work okay with the same cables then it probably isn't there either. That leaves just the devices.

Well, suspected as much and tried again by straightening/pulling the
cable. It worked! Am really sorry about this issue :-( I suspect the
cables are having a role in the different devices : my card reader and
key drive function normally on that, but ipod does not. _Maybe_ there is
an issue about the current drawn by different devices that causes it to
fail.

Thanks for the help.
