Description Vesa-Pekka Palmu 2007-07-12 22:24:53 UTC
Distribution: Debian unstable
Hardware Environment: Abit AB8 bios revision 19, Intel Core 2 Duo
Problem Description:
After updating the motherboard bios to revision 19 to fix POST issues, the kernel does not boot with acpi enabled anymore.

Unfortunately I didn't write up the bios revision before update, but it was atleast 14 acording the changelog: http://www2.abit.com.tw/page/en/download/download_bios_detail.php?pFILE_TYPE=Bios&pMAIN_TYPE=Motherboard&pTITLE_ON_SCREEN=AB9+Pro&pSOCKET_TYPE=LGA775

During bootup I get "IRQ 19 nobody cared" error (will doublecheck later in the evening) and bootup freezes after detecting USB devices, so I have to manualy write up the error message.

The machine boots up without problems with acpi=off, but then SATA hotplug won't work.

I have also tried debian stock kernels 2.6.21-2-486 and 2.6.8-2 with same results.

I will attach acpidump output.

Steps to reproduce: Boot with ACPI enabled

Made additional experiments and booting with usb legacy support disabled and with irqpoll option seems to work.

With legacy usb keyboard support and irqpoll option booting fails (irq 11 nobody cared and then sata drives stop working).

Without irqpoll and with legacy usb support booting fails with irq 18 nobody cared and loss of sata drives.

Also tried pci=noacpi but that didn't do anything.

Writing down the exact error messages is really hard because sata errors keep filling up the screen.

Turns out that orginal bios was revision 10, downgraded to revision 14 and acpi works, also achi, but this pile of crap won't post with usb keyboard attached. Will attach working acpidump.

And note for everyone, don't buy Abit AB9 (pro) motherboards, the bios has bug after bug...

acpidump of working bios revision 14
Comment 6 Len Brown 2007-07-25 19:22:07 UTC
thanks for the acpidump, please include the matching complete dmesg
and /proc/ingterrupts.
But as BIOS 14 works, what we really want is the acpidump when
booted with BIOS 19.

please boot with acpi=off on BIOS 19 and collect the acpidump for that.
Also, we'll need lspci -vv.
If you can capture the serial console for the boot failure,
that would be ideal.
Comment 7 Vesa-Pekka Palmu 2007-07-25 21:19:56 UTC
The first acpidump is from bios revision 19 (http://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=12021) same for dmidecode output. I will provide additional information next weekend.

Comment 14 Vesa-Pekka Palmu 2007-07-30 09:44:16 UTC
Unfortunately I'm unable to capture output from boot with bios revision 19 via serial terminal, as I don't have a serial cable nor a second computer with serial port (my laptop doesn't have serial ports).
Comment 15 Vesa-Pekka Palmu 2007-08-26 13:21:39 UTC
New bios from abit (revision 20) seems to fix acpi issues and even executes the achi-bios, will test the new bios further and close this if it is stable.
Comment 16 Vesa-Pekka Palmu 2007-09-02 08:30:24 UTC
Bios revision 20 fixes all my problems and it seems to be stable, so I'm closing this.
