Most recent kernel where this bug did *NOT* occur:2.6.20 Distribution:Fedora Core 6.91 and up Hardware Environment: Asus P4V8X-X motherboard, Celeron2400, 512M RAM IDE drives Software Environment: fedora core Problem Description: This problem occured at first when I tried to install a FC7rc2 on my home-box, but didn't succeded. At second time, when I wanted to compile a new 2.6.21 kernel from vanilla. Both times there was the same halts The booting procedure halts BEFORE acpi initialisation before these lines ------------------- ACPI: Processor [CPU1] (supports 16 throttling states) ACPI Exception (acpi_processor-0677): AE_NOT_FOUND, Processor Device is not present [20060707] ------------------- The last lines in character console mode are: ---------- io scheduler deadline registered io scheduler cfq registered (default) PCI: Bypassing VIA 8237 APIC De-Assert Message ---------- and in framebuffer console mode: ---------- vesafb: Truecolor: size=0:5:6:5, shift=0:11:5:0 Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 128x48 fb0: VESA VGA frame buffer device ---------- Once the system halts, the ctrl-alt-del is not working any more, only reset button. Steps to reproduce: get a p4v8x-x motherboard, and try to boot. From that dvd-media I successfully installed many systems without problems, but not with this MB.
please attach the output from dmesg -s64000 on the latest working kernel -- i guess that would be 2.6.20.stable also paste the /proc/interrupts If booting with "acpi=off" works in 2.6.20, please try that with 2.6.21 If you can boot with "debug" and capture the serial console output from the failure, that would be ideal. a digital photo of the screen upon the boot hang may also help.
I don't use but tried with new kernel "acpi=off" kernel parameter nothing changed. Tried with debug option, but the boot process fails exactly on the same place For who can I mail the digital photo about this situation? bye kako The req. information: the latest working kernel I can run on this box: 2.6.20-1.2925.fc6 __________________________________ dmesg -s64000: Linux version 2.6.20-1.2925.fc6 (brewbuilder@hs20-bc1-7.build.redhat.com) (gcc version 4.1.1 20070105 (Red Hat 4.1.1-51)) #1 SMP Sat Mar 10 19:15:16 EST 2007 BIOS-provided physical RAM map: sanitize start sanitize end copy_e820_map() start: 0000000000000000 size: 000000000009fc00 end: 000000000009fc00 type: 1 copy_e820_map() type is E820_RAM copy_e820_map() start: 000000000009fc00 size: 0000000000000400 end: 00000000000a0000 type: 2 copy_e820_map() start: 00000000000e4000 size: 000000000001c000 end: 0000000000100000 type: 2 copy_e820_map() start: 0000000000100000 size: 000000001fe30000 end: 000000001ff30000 type: 1 copy_e820_map() type is E820_RAM copy_e820_map() start: 000000001ff30000 size: 0000000000010000 end: 000000001ff40000 type: 3 copy_e820_map() start: 000000001ff40000 size: 00000000000b0000 end: 000000001fff0000 type: 4 copy_e820_map() start: 000000001fff0000 size: 0000000000010000 end: 0000000020000000 type: 2 copy_e820_map() start: 00000000ff7c0000 size: 0000000000840000 end: 0000000100000000 type: 2 BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009fc00 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000000009fc00 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000000e4000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000001ff30000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000001ff30000 - 000000001ff40000 (ACPI data) BIOS-e820: 000000001ff40000 - 000000001fff0000 (ACPI NVS) BIOS-e820: 000000001fff0000 - 0000000020000000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000ff7c0000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) 0MB HIGHMEM available. 511MB LOWMEM available. found SMP MP-table at 000ff780 Using x86 segment limits to approximate NX protection Entering add_active_range(0, 0, 130864) 0 entries of 256 used Zone PFN ranges: DMA 0 -> 4096 Normal 4096 -> 130864 HighMem 130864 -> 130864 early_node_map[1] active PFN ranges 0: 0 -> 130864 On node 0 totalpages: 130864 DMA zone: 40 pages used for memmap DMA zone: 0 pages reserved DMA zone: 4056 pages, LIFO batch:0 Normal zone: 1237 pages used for memmap Normal zone: 125531 pages, LIFO batch:31 HighMem zone: 0 pages used for memmap DMI 2.3 present. as this is a uniprocessor IOAPIC machine, one thing to try on 2.6.21 would be "noapic". If it still fails, then we know it isn't an issue specific to IOAPIC configuration. As this is a VIA box, it may have some quirk-related issues.
Created attachment 11454 [details] the freeze itself after the pci hotplug row must be an acpi related one
I already tried with "noapic", "nolapic" and "acpi=off" kernel parameters, but nothing changed
I know i have nothing to do with this bug, and no one commented on this for some time... But I was having very similar ACPI issues with 2.6.21 and 2.6.21.1 too, and I believe that Commit 79fff270026dc46634563a29b99e4034028ee919 fixed this issue. It is already in 2.6.22-rc1, is working/booting with me, so could you please test if it works for you?
Hi Kako, Did you get chance to try the kernel suggested in #7? As additional information, it would be helpful to have a trace from the failed boot which you can get with a serial console. This way we can see if any of the interrupts got set up incorrectly, etc. even better if you add "debug" boot parameter. If it doesn't work for you I can recommend at this point do the bisect search for the patch that caused the problem from 2.6.20 to 21. Thanks, --Natalie
Same motherboard here. Using 2.6.22.{1,2} I have a hard reboot with acpi, working fine with acpi=off.

Solved by changing BIOS settings as following: PCI? (don't remember exactly) -> Plug and Play OS: [Yes] Power -> Suspend Mode [S1 (POS) only] -> ACPI 2.0 Support [No] -> ACPI APIC support [Enabled]
Sebastien, Do you know what was the BIOS setting before you change in comment# 13? It's good know there is a solution. thanks.
Can't remember, but the "Power -> Suspend Mode" wasn't "[S1 (POS) only]" it was something other. and maybe the "PnP OS" was no [No] but it isn't sure. At the evening I'll go to playing with this, and answer to you. bye kako bugme-daemon@bugzilla.kernel.org
I'll mark this bug as wontfix , as there is a solution in bios setting.. thanks.
