Most recent kernel where this bug did *NOT* occur: Has occurred on every kernel I tried Distribution: Gentoo Hardware Environment: Sony Vaio VGN-FE790 (PCG-7R1L) Software Environment: Problem Description: echo x > /sys/class/backlight/sony/brightness # has no effect This is a relatively new offering from sony. I'm glad to be your guinea pig. I'm not entirely sure what you need to debug this, so let me know if you need more.

In my experience brightness on newer vaios with an NVidia graphic card can only be changed using the smartdimmer utility (http://www.acc.umu.se/~erikw/program/smartdimmer-0.1.tar.bz2). I think the issue is even mentioned in Documentation/sonypi.txt, I'll update the wiki to warn about that too. Le me know if it still doesn't work.
Works great. Thanks!
