Most recent kernel where this bug did *NOT* occur:2.6.20.7 Distribution:Gentoo Hardware Environment:Macbook Core1 2Ghz, 250GB Western Digital USB2 HD Software Environment:Normal desktop (problem occurs before / is mounted), packages compiled with -O2 and "prescott" for arch. Problem Description: When the system initializes from the initramfs and usb-storage is initialized, a long pause occurs. At this point, my external HD which was automatically turned on during bios initialization shuts down, the pause still continues for about 20 sec and then the boot procedure continues as normal. Once operational, the system can mount the HD as usual. The overall modprobing of usb-storage takes roughly 1min 1min20. *Note*: 2.6.18 and 2.6.20 series did nt have this problem. Steps to reproduce: The problem occurs whenever the hard drive is plugged in and usb-storage is being initialized at boot time. Cheers, VF
Please provide additional debugging information by (1) rebuilding your kernel and your initramfs image with CONFIG_USB_DEBUG and CONFIG_USB_STORAGE_DEBUG both turned on and (2) attaching the dmesg log showing what happens during boot-up, including that 1-minute delay.
