Description Matt 2007-04-13 15:05:57 UTC
Most recent kernel where this bug did *NOT* occur:n/a
Distribution:ubuntu-feisty-edgy knoppix 5.5.1
Hardware Environment:ASUS M2A-VM latest bios..
Software Environment:
Problem Description:Tried on Knoppix, Feisty, etc.. every livecd distro.. the
amd 690G / SB600 chipset(Asus M2A-VM latest bios=0402) isn't compatible for some
reason and locks up during hardware detection... have sought support from AMD,
Asus, Ubuntu, Knoppix etc... no one seems to be able to help.

Steps to reproduce: insert any livecd on an AMD 690G SB600 motherboard
Comment 1 Matt 2007-04-13 17:36:03 UTC
I can get it up and running with a 64bit kernel...(i.e. feisty AMD64) however
its still a no go with the 32bit...
Comment 2 B. Keroack 2007-04-17 03:52:13 UTC
Ubuntu feisty kernel (2.6.20-generic) and one 3rd party kernel I've tried works,
I'm trying to investigate what patches/config options are responsible.Vanilla
2.6.20.7 crashes.

Booting with 'acpi=off' fixes kernel crash but my USB keyboard no longer works,
making the system unusable.
Comment 3 Matt 2007-04-17 07:20:22 UTC
thanks for the tip with the acpi=off but I have the same issue.. I have usb
mouse and keyboard :C

the 64bit kernel seems to work great... go figure... I am a little leery of
running 64bit as I have heard horror stories of instability.. incompatibility etc...

thanks again for the help
Comment 4 B. Keroack 2007-04-17 18:33:38 UTC
OK, after looking through this I found out that vanilla 2.6.20-rc5 boots fine.
The cause of this bug must have been introduced after this (I may try -rc6 to
see if that works since we already know 2.6.20 final crashes).

There's this line in dmesg:
"ATI board detected. Disabling timer routing over 8254."

I'm not sure if this check is present in later kernels, if not this may solve
the issue with AMD 690G/M2A-VM motherboards.

B,

Thanks again! Since you have already tested 2.6.20-RC5, do you want me to test
RC6 and up? I will see what I can do about recompiling these kernels into the
ubuntu livecd...

Matt,

Sure, test -rc6 if you can. Also, I've tried 2.6.19-gentoo (the distro I'm on)
and it crashed but I didn't try 2.6.19 vanilla. It would be interesting if older
kernels crashed too.

It would also be helpful if you have a decent digital camera to take a picture
of the kernel crash backtrace. I have a pic I took with a camera phone however
the text isn't very legible.

yes I have tried some older versions they seem to crash also...

I am having some trouble recompiling the kernels for use in a livecd... do you
know a good tutorial... I would really love to help squash this bug :)
Comment 9 Matt 2007-04-19 14:17:18 UTC
AHA!!! I found the culprit causing this bug...

If you Disable HPET (High Precision Event Timer) in the bios... the newest
ubuntu feisty works great... however if it is enabled it locks up... hopefully
this will be addressed in the future... but I can live with this workaround..
Comment 10 B. Keroack 2007-04-27 17:09:37 UTC
This appears to persist in 2.6.21.
Comment 11 Miroslav Prasil /cezz/ 2007-05-22 05:23:50 UTC
Upgrading the BIOS on ASUS M2A-VM to latest version (0601) solved the problem
for me. (Works now even when the HPET is turned on)

I have problem with PCI devices on this motherboard thought.
Comment 12 B. Keroack 2007-05-27 15:53:23 UTC
Updating to bios rev 0601 does NOT solve this problem on my machine, as it still
hangs on bootup.
Comment 13 B. Keroack 2007-05-28 12:15:09 UTC
Just to be clear, with recent kernels (2.6.21.3) and newest bios (0601) the
crash no longer occurs during hardware init but instead happens on my machine
when the init scripts/udev load the usbhid module. Disabling HPET in the bios
allows the machine to boot normally.
Comment 14 B. Keroack 2007-07-14 15:07:20 UTC
This bug appears to be fixed with latest BIOS version 901. I've tested with kernels 2.6.21.6 and 2.6.22, both boot fine with HPET enabled on BIOS version 901.
Comment 15 Fu Michael 2007-11-06 21:15:57 UTC
good to know it's fixed in BIOS update. maybe a dup of bug# 6975? anyway, mark it as wontfix..
