Most recent kernel where this bug did *NOT* occur: 2.6.20.1 Distribution: Debian Hardware Environment: Asus M2V mainboard with VIA southbridge VT8237A Software Environment: KDE, XMMS, amixer, alsamixergui etc. Problem Description: Sound works with kernel 2.6.20.1, but with kernel 2.6.21* (tested up to rc5-git1) is doesn't work anymore. Hint: Calling "amixer scontents" I can't see a mixer control "master". dmesg output: Linux version 2.6.21-rc5-git1.20070327 (root@solon) (gcc version 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-21)) #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Mar 27 23:14:55 CEST 2007 BIOS-provided physical RAM map: sanitize start sanitize end copy_e820_map() start: 0000000000000000 size: 000000000009fc00 end: 000000000009fc00 type: 1 copy_e820_map() type is E820_RAM copy_e820_map() start: 000000000009fc00 size: 0000000000000400 end: 00000000000a0000 type: 2 copy_e820_map() start: 00000000000e4000 size: 000000000001c000 end: 0000000000100000 type: 2 copy_e820_map() start: 0000000000100000 size: 000000003feb0000 end: 000000003ffb0000 type: 1 copy_e820_map() type is E820_RAM copy_e820_map() start: 000000003ffb0000 size: 000000000000e000 end: 000000003ffbe000 type: 3 copy_e820_map() start: 000000003ffbe000 size: 0000000000022000 end: 000000003ffe0000 type: 4 copy_e820_map() start: 000000003ffe0000 size: 0000000000020000 end: 0000000040000000 type: 2 copy_e820_map() start: 00000000fec00000 size: 0000000000001000 end: 00000000fec01000 type: 2 copy_e820_map() start: 00000000fecc0000 size: 0000000000001000 end: 00000000fecc1000 type: 2 copy_e820_map() start: 00000000ff780000 size: 0000000000880000 end: 0000000100000000 type: 2 BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009fc00 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000000009fc00 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000000e4000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000003ffb0000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000003ffb0000 - 000000003ffbe000 (ACPI data) BIOS-e820: 000000003ffbe000 - 000000003ffe0000 (ACPI NVS) BIOS-e820: 000000003ffe0000 - 0000000040000000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fec00000 - 00000000fec01000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fecc0000 - 00000000fecc1000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000ff780000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) 127MB HIGHMEM available. 896MB LOWMEM available. found SMP MP-table at 000ff780 Entering add_active_range(0, 0, 262064) 0 entries of 256 used Zone PFN ranges: DMA 0 -> 4096 Normal 4096 -> 229376 HighMem 229376 -> 262064 early_node_map[1] active PFN ranges 0: 0 -> 262064 On node 0 totalpages: 262064 DMA zone: 32 pages used for memmap DMA zone: 0 pages reserved DMA zone: 4064 pages, LIFO batch:0 Normal zone: 1760 pages used for memmap Normal zone: 223520 pages, LIFO batch:31 HighMem zone: 255 pages used for memmap HighMem zone: 32433 pages, LIFO batch:7 DMI present. Please elaborate what doesn't work. I don't see any errors in the log.
Created attachment 11251 [details] output of 'amixer scontents' with kernel 2.6.20.1
Created attachment 11252 [details] output of 'amixer scontents' with kernel 2.6.21
When I start e.g. xmms, amarok or xdtv I can't hear any sound. The log was just for completeness. I've added the output of the command 'amixer scontents' for kernel 2.6.20.1 and 2.6.21-rc5-git6 where you can find some differences e.g. the missing 'Master' control (if that means anything).
Another bug report from another user: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=178243 The bug seems the same: 2.6.20 worked, 2.6.21 does not. In 2.6.21, all audio applications function normally (no errors) but no sound can be heard. 2.6.21 dmesg includes these messages during probe: hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC660VD/ALC861VD, trying auto-probe from BIOS... ALSA device list: #0: HDA VIA VT82xx at 0xfbffc000 irq 17 And then this message later on, presumably when trying to play a sound: hda-intel: Invalid position buffer, using LPIB read method instead. 2.6.20 (working kernel) dmesg includes all the same messages EXCEPT the "Unknown model" message: https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=119819&action=view 2.6.21 dmesg is here: https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=119046&action=view I'll follow up with exactly which hardware is being used here. However, by comparing lspci output from this bug and the downstream bug, it appears that both users have identical or very similar hardware.
sent in a patch which should also work for Hans-Georg: http://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2007-May/001089.html
patch accepted into ALSA tree and is on its way upstream
