Description Hans-Georg Rist 2007-03-28 02:20:54 UTC
Most recent kernel where this bug did *NOT* occur: 2.6.20.1
Distribution: Debian
Hardware Environment: Asus M2V mainboard with VIA southbridge VT8237A
Software Environment: KDE, XMMS, amixer, alsamixergui etc.

Problem Description:
Sound works with kernel 2.6.20.1, but with kernel 2.6.21* (tested up to
rc5-git1) is doesn't work anymore.
Hint: Calling "amixer scontents" I can't see a mixer control "master".

dmesg output:

Comment 1 Takashi Iwai 2007-04-16 02:06:16 UTC
Please elaborate what doesn't work. I don't see any errors in the log.

output of 'amixer scontents' with kernel 2.6.21
Comment 4 Hans-Georg Rist 2007-04-21 12:18:24 UTC
When I start e.g. xmms, amarok or xdtv I can't hear any sound.
The log was just for completeness.

I've added the output of the command 'amixer scontents' for kernel 2.6.20.1 and
2.6.21-rc5-git6 where you can find some differences e.g. the missing 'Master'
control (if that means anything).
Comment 5 Daniel Drake 2007-05-20 10:35:09 UTC
Another bug report from another user: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=178243

The bug seems the same: 2.6.20 worked, 2.6.21 does not. In 2.6.21, all audio
applications function normally (no errors) but no sound can be heard.

2.6.21 dmesg includes these messages during probe:

hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC660VD/ALC861VD, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
  ALSA device list:
  #0: HDA VIA VT82xx at 0xfbffc000 irq 17

And then this message later on, presumably when trying to play a sound:

hda-intel: Invalid position buffer, using LPIB read method instead.

2.6.20 (working kernel) dmesg includes all the same messages EXCEPT the "Unknown
model" message: https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=119819&action=view

2.6.21 dmesg is here: https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=119046&action=view

I'll follow up with exactly which hardware is being used here. However, by
comparing lspci output from this bug and the downstream bug, it appears that
both users have identical or very similar hardware.
Comment 6 Daniel Drake 2007-05-20 13:58:24 UTC
sent in a patch which should also work for Hans-Georg:
http://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2007-May/001089.html
Comment 7 Daniel Drake 2007-05-23 17:43:42 UTC
patch accepted into ALSA tree and is on its way upstream
