Description Ben B 2006-09-13 11:32:25 UTC
I have just upgraded my notebook BIOS, and speedstep-centrino stopped loading,
now I get a "no such device" error. I also can't load acpi-cpufreq. It may be
that the BIOS itself is broken, but perhaps it's a "valid" BIOS condition that
Linux can't yet recognise. I've tried under 2.6.18-rc4, 2.6.17.13 and the Ubuntu
kernels. Relevent info:

Ben,

I don't see _PSS _PCT objects in ACPI dump that are required for the driver to
support speedstep. For some reason BIOS stopped exporting those information.
Can you check whether this new BIOS has some option to enable this feature?

Something that may say Speedstep, Enhanced Speedstep, Enhanced Intel Speedstep
(EIST) or something similar?

Comment 4 Ben B 2006-09-13 12:04:07 UTC
Just went into the BIOS and the only CPU related option is to enable or disable
dual-core mode. I disabled, and Linux now sees one core, but still no cpufreq.

There aren't many places for this option - the bios setup screen is one of those
basic drop-down menu ones with only a few options.
Comment 5 Venkatesh Pallipadi 2006-09-13 13:33:02 UTC
Time to send a mail to your BIOS provider.

Do you have Windows installed on this system? Can you check whether frequency
changes are working over there. If you say it does not work on Windows you may
get better attention from the BIOS provider ;-)
Comment 6 Len Brown 2006-09-13 21:46:09 UTC
As the BIOS here seems to have deleted processor power management,
there isn't anything we can do.

It would be interesting if you could load the previous BIOS, verify
that it works, and attach the dmesg and acpidump from that configuration.

I've loaded the previous bios and cpufreq works again.

Attached the dmesg and acipdump from this bios. So it looks like a nasty BIOS
bug, thus have sent a case to HP regarding this issue and running the earlier
bios for now.
Comment 10 Brett Johnson 2006-11-29 12:23:02 UTC
A new F.08 BIOS is available now from the hp.com website, which fixes the
speedstep problems on the nx7400.

In addition, I've been told that a new BIOS rev is planned for all 2006 model
business notebooks, which will fix this problem across the board (including the
nc6400). It should be available sometime soon in December.
Comment 11 Kent Engstr 2006-11-30 01:58:03 UTC
I have spoken to HP support in Sweden about this problem too.
They told me they would escalate it.

I'm waiting for feedback and will post it here if and when I get it.
Comment 12 Kent Engstr 2006-12-05 08:57:18 UTC
I received a beta BIOS (68ycu.bin) from HP support today. Version F.06, dated
10/25/06. The upgrade worked, and now the cpufreq_ondemand module is loaded.

I cannot choose automatic in the Gnome PM applet menu, though.

If anybody is interested in logs, command outputs etc from the system, please
let me know.

How is the battery life with the new Bios?

Do you know when HP will be releasing the new BIOS? I called them up
repeatedly in Canada, and there is no info about the new BIOS version!

Thanks!
