Description milos mihajlovic 2006-08-08 06:03:38 UTC
Most recent kernel where this bug did not occur:
Distribution:
ubuntu dapper
Hardware Environment:
ibm thinkpad r51e
Software Environment:
gnome-ubuntu
[17179569.184000] Linux version 2.6.15 (root@ibm-laptop)
(gcc-Version 4.0.3 (Ubu ntu

Problem Description:
impossible to wake my thinkpad r51e up after sleep, it turns completely off. i
tried acpi,apm,swsuspend,suspend2: nothing works

Please try latest base kernel.

Could it be just video resume issue?
Just take a look at Documentation/power/video.txt

Please describe exactly how to reproduct the problem.
It isn't clear if you are talking about suspend to RAM
or suspend to disk.

> 2.6.15
Did it work before 2.6.15
Does it work with 2.6.18?
Comment 5 milos mihajlovic 2006-08-10 03:26:30 UTC
i'm talking about suspend to RAM and suspend to disk,
none of them works on my laptop.

when i entered "hibernate" in the terminal or when i chose "suspend" from the ubuntu
dapper on/off-menu i've got a black screen, the half-moon (suspend-LED) was blinking for
a while, and afterwards this LED dyed and only the power-LED was on.
The combination Fn-F4 (hotkey for suspend on/off on ibm laptops) didn't show any
reaction, so i had to hold the power-button for some seconds. the computer didn't wake
up, it booted as if it was turned off before.

i tried kernel 2.6.15, the ubuntu-kernel 2.6.15-26-386/686 of course, but there was no
difference in putting the computer to sleep.
i tried to compile a 2.6.18 and 2.6.17 kernel for some hours, but in my .config was
something wrong, so it came always to kernel panics.
i tried kernel 2.6.14.3 too, because of a german guy, who got a similar thinkpad like me
(http://www.kaltertee.de/index.php?current=linux),

but the new kernel compiled with his .config (http://www.kaltertee.de/files/.config)

didn't worked on my computer. i had problems when X was booting up. i saw the
mouse-pointer twice only for a second, and then X crashed down.

maybe it's a video resume issue, i'm not sure. anyway, i took a look at
Documentation/power/video.txt.
so, i've made a little step further:
i changed something: i found a hint of a guy on the ubuntuforums, who has the same
thinkpad like me(http://www.ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-140178.html):

i added the following kernel options to grub:
noapic nolapic acpi_sleep=s3_bios pci=usepirqmask pci=noacpi pnpacpi=off

but when i entered hibernate in the video and in the plain text mode it wasn't possible
to resume.

so i decided to try only acpi_sleep=s3_bios in the text mode. it really worked for the
first time ever. i could come back to the console, but "startx" returned with a error.
it had problems loading some x-fonts.
only the command "X" succeeded and showed me the mouse-pointer and i could also move the
pointer.

but in the vga-mode i had no luck.

Comment 7 milos mihajlovic 2006-08-16 09:58:23 UTC
hello

ok i had a look in the dokumentation/power/video.txt und booted with the kernel-option
"acpi_sleep=s3_bios" with the latest stable kernel, 2.6.17.8
.
when i booted in the recovery-mode ("single"-option)
i (sometimes!) succeeded to resume with suspend-to-ram (S3) and to start gdm. but the
network didn't worked. I often got bad block errors after fsck checkup.

when i booted wihout the recovery-mode my computer, after wakeup from suspend-to-ram my
computer ALWASY hanged on resume. afterwards fsck gave a lot of bad block errors out.

suspend-to-disk (S4) seems to work, but without networking und working mouse-pointer:
even when i reload ehci_hcd , ohci_hcd and usbhid, the mouse-pointer is alwasy frozen.

by the way, what means that error-message?
[17179582.116000] ACPI Error (evgpe-0688): No handler or method for GPE[ 0], disabling
event [20060127]

help is very appreciated!
regards, milos
