Description Marijn Schouten 2006-05-09 04:00:00 UTC
Most recent kernel where this bug did not occur: unknown
Distribution: Gentoo
Hardware Environment: MSI ms-7191 (ati rs482m4 with sb450) athlon64-3200+
Software Environment:
Problem Description: /proc/acpi does not exist, even though acpi is enabled.
This could be related to the buggy DSDT of this board. There is a 0x03
character in a ACPI name (as reported in dmesg below).

Steps to reproduce: boot with noapic. (Without noapic I cannot boot if acpi is
enabled in my BIOS.)

output of "dmesg|grep -i acpi":

Comment 1 Marijn Schouten 2006-05-09 05:27:25 UTC
I've tried booting with the following patch:

*** utmisc.c    Fri May  5 02:03:45 2006
--- patched_utmisc.c    Tue May  9 13:23:56 2006

                      (character >= 'A' && character <= 'Z') ||
                      (character >= '0' && character <= '9'))) {
                        return (FALSE);

but when my startup scripts are running dhcpcd I get something like "interrupt
#15 disabled" and then my box doesn't make any progress, although the keyboard
is working a bit. CTRL_ALT_DEL doesn't work though. I've been unable to find
any log of booting this patched kernel :( so I don't know what's going on.
Comment 2 Len Brown 2006-05-18 01:03:43 UTC
ACPI is indeed disabled because it found a non-ASCII character
in your DSDT.

> ACPI: Subsystem revision 20060127

We have a couple of fixes floating around for this.

Please try the simple hack in the 22nd comment here:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=147621

This may also be fixed upstream. Please try the latest -mm kernel,
or the latest ACPI patch here:
http://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/lenb/acpi/patches/test/2.6.16/
Comment 3 Marijn Schouten 2006-05-18 04:37:46 UTC
I tried the simple patch and it produces the same effect as my own. Which means
it seems to hang when doing dhcpcd (as reported earlier), but really it is just
failing. I was copying some lines and all of a sudden dhcpcd timed out and kdm
came up. This time i've found the log:

I also tried applying
http://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/lenb/acpi/patches/test/2.6.16/acpi-acpica-20060310-2.6.16.diff.gz
to a 2.6.16 kernel, but this doesn't seem to be the way.
Comment 4 Marijn Schouten 2006-05-18 05:11:12 UTC
I tried my own patch again, to see if I could get the log and see if it is
really the same as the other patch. For some reason though, this time it booted
cleanly. Here is dmesg:

ACPI seems to be working, at least I now have /proc/acpi/dsdt
Comment 5 Marijn Schouten 2006-05-18 06:20:52 UTC
I still don't know why it works now, but didn't work before, but I was able to
boot without noapic and also didn't get a double speed timer :) although there
is one new error. Resolving this bug for now, since my patch seems to be
working.

Here is the dmesg without noapic:

I don't know which patch was included, but in kernel 2.6.17.6 I get varied
problems culminating in a kernel panic. All problems go away again when I use
the simple patch in comment #1.
Comment 8 Marijn Schouten 2007-01-02 01:18:20 UTC
