Description Roger Lucas 2006-04-24 02:25:57 UTC
Most recent kernel where this bug did not occur:
Only tested with 2.6.16.9

Distribution:
Debian Sarge with updated 2.6.16.9 kernel

Hardware Environment:
Abit LG-81 with 4xSATA drives

Software Environment:
No applications running

Problem Description:
If I set the CPU high temperature limit too low in lm-sensors (e.g. 25C) then I
get two problems:
 - I get a kernel dump (see attached dmesg log) from kacpid
 - The machine runs VERY slowly (~5secs to respond to CR on an SSH prompt)

If I restore a higher CPU temperature limit in lm-sensors (e.g. 65C) then the
problems immediately clear.

If I run the kernel without ACPI and repeat the above test, then I get no kernel
dump and the machine doesn't slow down. I do, however, get a beeping sound from
the motherboard when the "over-temperature" condition exists.

If I remove the "thermal" module and repeat the above test, then I get no kernel
dump, but the machine does run slowly as described above.

I have tried recompiling the k83627ehf module to disable the OVT# and SMI#
outputs, following a suggestion from the lm-sensors mailing list, but it makes
no difference. I still get the kernel dump and the slow operation.

Steps to reproduce:
Install 2.6.16.9 on the LG-81 motherboard.
modprobe k83627ehf
cp /etc/sensors.conf /etc/sensors-low.conf
Modify /etc/sensors-low.conf to set a low value for temp2_high (e.g. 25C)
sensors -s -c /etc/sensors-low.conf

The problem immediately occurs.

sensors -s -c /etc/sensors.conf

The problem immediately clears.

The requested outputs from debug utilities follow. Sorry that this is so much,
but this is what it says that I should post...

RESOLVED

I believe it was a bug in the BIOS. v1.0 was installed on the motherboard, and
I updated it to v1.4. The problem no longer exists. Thanks to everyone for
their help in this.

FWIW, I don't think that kacpid should have kernel faulted, but the problem is
resolved by the BIOS change.
Comment 3 Luming Yu 2006-04-25 00:36:18 UTC
Good.

Could you please post the acpidump of the new bios. And Let me understand how
the old one cause trouble.

Dump of ACPI for the Abit LG-81 BIOS version 1.4

I don't know what is different between this one and the older ACPI dump on this
bug report which came from the older LG-81, but the v1.4 BIOS doesn't cause the
kacpid kernel dump when the CPU temperature exceeds the high temperature value
in the W83627EHG chip on the mobo.
Comment 5 Roger Lucas 2006-04-27 01:42:10 UTC
I corrected the summary as the problem was not with lm-sensors. lm-sensors
simply cause the BIOS bug to show. Updating the BIOS solved the problem but
kacpid should not really have kernel dumped anyhow. I don't think there is any
problem with lm-sensors.
