Most recent kernel where this bug did not occur: 2.6.13.5 Distribution: Slackware Hardware Environment: 2x Dual Core Opteron AMDs on a Tyan K8WE (S2895) board which has an LSI 53C1030 U320 SCSI controller Software Environment: Problem Description: The kernel panics when I try to boot the system with a 2.6.15.4 (and 2.6.14.7) kernel compiled from source, while 2.6.13.5 works fine. The config for the kernel is the same in all instances. I do not have a dump, but what appears to happen is that the scsi controller does not get detected and hence the root filesystem of my scsi drive is not mounted, so the kernel panics with the typical: VFS: Cannot open root device "812" or unknown-block(8,18) Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,18) After the Fusion MPT driver is loaded there are no relevant devices detected, as in 2.6.13.5.
The fusion config entries got renamed around 2.6.14, I think. What does `grep FUSION .config' say? Mine gives: CONFIG_FUSION=y CONFIG_FUSION_SPI=y CONFIG_FUSION_FC=y CONFIG_FUSION_SAS=y CONFIG_FUSION_MAX_SGE=128 CONFIG_FUSION_CTL=y

I suggest you set them all to `y', see what happens.
If it still fails, we'd need to see the full `dmesg -s 1000000' output, if you can find some way of gathering it?
Ok, I enabled everything in 2.6.15.4, that is: CONFIG_FUSION=y CONFIG_FUSION_SPI=y CONFIG_FUSION_FC=y CONFIG_FUSION_SAS=y CONFIG_FUSION_MAX_SGE=128 CONFIG_FUSION_CTL=y It still crashes, same bootup sequence as far as I can tell, just a few more drivers loaded. I cannot gather the dmesg from the kernel that fails, I am sorry the kernel panics and I'm left half way through bootup. I got it from the 2.6.13.5 which works and I attach it. I looked at the bootup sequence of 2.6.15.4 and the chunk that does the fusion MPT driver setup is similar, but like this: Fusion MPT base driver 3.03.04 Copyright (c) 1999-2005 LSI Logic Corporation Fusion MPT SPI Host driver 3.03.04 Fusion MPT FC Host driver 3.03.04 Fusion MPT SAS Host driver 3.03.04 Fusion MPT misc device (ioctl) driver 3.03.04 mptctl: Registered with Fusion MPT base driver mptctl: /dev/mptctl @ (major,minor=10,220) and then it carries on with ohci stuff which looks suspect: ohci1394: $Rev: 1313 $ Ben Collins <bcollins@debian.org> ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNK4] enabled at IRQ 19 ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:01:05.0[A] -> Link [LNK4] -> GSI 19 (level, high) -> IRQ 18 ohci1394: fw-host0: OHCI-1394 1.1 (PCI): IRQ=[18] MMIO=[b0104000-b01047ff] Max Packet=[2048] I think that IRQ 18 is supposed to be used by the LSI controller, according at least to the dmesg of the working kernel. Please try pci=noacpi
If 2.6.13 boots with "acpi=off", please try the "acpi=off" with 2.6.16. Please attach the output from lspci -vv. Please build both old and new kernels with CONFIG_PCI_MSI=n and report if you see a difference.
a) with pci=noacpi on 2.6.15 kernel there is no luck. (same results) b) with acpi=off under 2.6.13 the system does not boot, from the bootup sequence and device probing, it seems very similar to the sequence that fails under 2.6.15. (the LSI controller is not detected) c) Below you should see the lspci -vv using the 2.6.13.5 kernel d) CONFIG_PCI_MSI is not set on either kernels (I assume this is the same as having CONFIG_PCI_MSI=n) -- lspci -vv 00:00.0 Memory controller: nVidia Corporation CK804 Memory Controller (rev a3) Subsystem: Tyan Computer: Unknown device 2895 Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- Can you turn on MPT_DEBUG_INIT in drivers/message/fusion/mptbase.h, i.e., add a line like #define MPT_DEBUG_INIT 1 at the beginning of the file? That should turn on some debug output when the driver claims and initializes the device. When it doesn't work, you're seeing: > Fusion MPT base driver 3.03.04 > Copyright (c) 1999-2005 LSI Logic Corporation > Fusion MPT SPI Host driver 3.03.04 > Fusion MPT FC Host driver 3.03.04 which suggests that mpt_attach() isn't even being called. The first thing mpt_attach() does is call pci_enable_device(), which is what prints the "ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:0a:06.0[A] -> GSI 30 (level, low) -> IRQ 18" message. Can you capture the failing dmesg with a serial console or netconsole?
For the 1030, all that is needed in .config is CONFIG_FUSION=y CONFIG_FUSION_SPI=y The CONFIG_FUSION_SAS is for SAS cards, and CONFIG_FUSION_FC is for Fibre Channel cards. And the CONFIG_FUSION_SPI is SCSI Parallel Interface, such as 1030. Per Bjorn Helgaas suggestion, all the debug defines can be enabled/disabled in the driver Makefile. They are all listed there. You will see DMPT_DEBUG_INIT in the MPT general section. In addition, pls can you enable DMPT_DEBUG_FAIL and DMPT_DEBUG_DEBUG. Redirect serial console pls, by passing console=ttyS0 from grub.
I modified the mptbase.h to enable debugging. On the 2.6.15 there is no more output coming out, which means I guess what you speculate of init functions not being called at all. In contrast the 2.6.13.5 provides a huge trail of extra information (I can provide that if it makes any difference). Unfortunately, I cannot at this time grab the boot sequence log of the kernel that crashes. I will look for a serial cable and attempt to capture it with a serial console.
Stathis - The function that brings up the card is in mptbase.c => mpt_attach(). You will see dinitprintk(), they get called when you enable MPT_DEBUG_INIT. You will see dprintk(), they get called when you enable MPT_DEBUG. Perhaps you could add some printk's your self to see where in this function your getting to. Pls enable the debug defines from the driver Makefile, and redirect cosole output to remote system.
Since you don't see any of the init debug output, it seems like the driver's probe() function (mptspi_probe()) isn't being called. But it doesn't look like anything in the driver (e.g., the table of PCI IDs that it claims) has changed. Can you add "#define DEBUG 1" as the first line of these files: drivers/base/bus.c drivers/base/dd.c drivers/pci/quirks.c and add "debug" to your kernel command line? The path should be mptspi_init pci_register_driver __pci_register_driver driver_register bus_add_driver driver_attach __driver_attach driver_probe_device mptspi_probe But it sounds like we're not making it all the way. Maybe there's a PCI quirk that hides the device, or maybe the device doesn't match the PCI ID table for some reason. The "lspci -vx" output for the LSI device might be useful.
Ok, I tried adding a few things on the mptbase.c file as well as enabled debugging support through the makefile. I now get "mptbase: Registered for IOC reset notification" and nothing else regarding mptbase, it then goes ahead with the other drivers. I traced this back in mptbase.c line 6392, not sure if that helps any. Next I did what Bjorn suggested, but the log is very long and I cannot see what it sais anymore. Because I think I'm throwing mud in your eyes without a log of the output, I will try to get a serial cable and come back with the output, but it has to wait until tomorrow, so as to make things easier for everyone. Please be patient and thanks for all the help so far.
Can you send me the source code that is failing, via private email. I've been posting many patch's in the patch month, so that is why I ask for yours. Eric Moore
Unfortunately, the null-modem cables are extinct around my area, I will need some more time to locate one. Would it be any different if I moved the filesystem on the SATA drive that is detected and boot temporarily from there? Then at least I will be able to send you the dmesg output.
> Would it be any different if I moved the filesystem on the SATA drive > that is detected and boot temporarily from there? That should be fine. Another approach would be to turn off the debug stuff I suggested and just manually add printks in the path I mentioned (starting in mptspi_probe() and working backwards). But moving the filesystem is probably easier for you. Thanks for all the work you're putting into this. We'll get it figured out eventually.
I moved my root filesystem onto the sata drive (/dev/sda), so now I can at least boot. Attached is the dmesg from the failing 2.6.15.4, where the controller does not get detected. The active changes are those of Eric in comment #11 and #14 regarding the debugging of the respective drivers. I am not sure if it is significant, but both kernels I build seem to be built as arch/i386, rather than x86_64 (considering where the make install of the kernel copies them from at least). This is I assume because my Slackware distribution is the i386 flavor and not a 64-bit. If this is relevant please let me know, but why would the older kernel works and the other doesn't. I also here attach my .config in case there is something wrong there too. # # Automatically generated make config: don't edit # Linux kernel version: 2.6.15.4 # Wed Feb 15 18:52:35 2006 # CONFIG_X86_32=y CONFIG_SEMAPHORE_SLEEPERS=y CONFIG_X86=y CONFIG_MMU=y CONFIG_UID16=y CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA=y CONFIG_GENERIC_IOMAP=y CONFIG_ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC=y # sorry for the formatting of the attachments. Also disregard the floppy I/O errors, they are because of a damaged floppy I tried to use to copy you the files. I hope this helps

Can you try a boot with "pci=nommconf"? I think MMCONFIG was added after 2.6.13, so maybe something's wrong with it on your box.
> I think MMCONFIG was added after 2.6.13, so maybe something's > wrong with it on your box. I take that back; MMCONFIG *was* in 2.6.13, but it was disabled for AMD CPUs because of some known issues. Maybe there's still one lingering. In any case, a boot with "pci=nommconf" would be very interesting.
You were right, indeed the pci=nommconf did the trick, the controller was detected. I had to enable the kernel debugging features and tweak the log buffer size because the log did not fit the dmesg, which I managed to now get complete. Guys, where do we stand on this bug now? Thanks.
> Guys, where do we stand on this bug now? Greg KH says there's a patch in the latest -mm that should take care of this issue. stathis, can you try 2.6.16-rc5 and see whether it's fixed there? If not, try 2.6.16-rc5-mm1 and we can at least make sure it's fixed there.
Hi, I tried 2.6.16-rc5 and it appears to be fixed. I do not know if it is important anymore, but I have not been able to use the -mm patch against the 2.6.15 tree, it complained about a few things and make failed afterwards. Am I doing something wrong (applying the patch against the wrong version)? There is no instructions as far as I can tell where to apply it, I assumed it is 2.6.15. Thanks for the help. Let me know if you want me to perform any other tests. --st
> I tried 2.6.16-rc5 and it appears to be fixed. Great! Thanks for all your testing. > I do not know if it is important anymore, but I have > not been able to use the -mm patch against the 2.6.15 tree ... I use the -mm patch all the time, and it generally works fine. So I suspect you're applying it against the wrong tree. For 2.6.16-rc5-mm1, you should: - unpack a 2.6.15 tree - apply the 2.6.16-rc5 patch - apply the 2.6.16-rc5-mm1 patch I use "ketchup," which does all this stuff automatically: http://www.selenic.com/ketchup/wiki/ For example: $ mkdir work-mm $ cd work-mm $ ketchup 2.6.16-rc5-mm1
Stathis, was your testing successful? Can you confirm the problem is fixed? Thanks.
(In reply to comment #29) > Stathis, was your testing successful? Can you confirm the problem is fixed? > Thanks. > I haven't had any issues since, I currently use 2.6.20 on gentoo (meaning with the distro's patches). My relevant kernel config reads: # Fusion MPT device support CONFIG_FUSION=y CONFIG_FUSION_SPI=y # CONFIG_FUSION_FC is not set # CONFIG_FUSION_SAS is not set CONFIG_FUSION_MAX_SGE=64 # CONFIG_FUSION_CTL is not set I remember testing vanilla sources back then and it also worked, so I'd say its fixed long ago.
Yes this was all sorted out a while ago. Thanks for confirming this.
