Description Volker Armin Hemmann 2006-01-17 11:56:02 UTC
Most recent kernel where this bug did not occur:
 I don't know (yet)

Because I have to hit reset to get my computer 'back', I am a little bit reluctant to try lots of
kernel versions - I only have one computer ;) If someone wants me to try certain versions,
please tell me so.

Problem Description:
when I do: tar -cf /dev/st0 /home/energyman --exclude=/home/energyman/somefile -b 40
(or -b 20) --totals 1 >/backup.files 2>/backup.fehler, the keyboard stops working. The
mouse becomes extremly jerky, every movement is delayed by seconds and very
uncontrollable, but some X reactions are still there (like tooltips of kicker appear).

Steps to reproduce:

attach dlt drive to 2944 scsi card.
load aic7xxx module.
start backup with tar.

here I hit reset. The first reboot hanged immidiatly after grub, i hit reset again and it booted
normaly

The memory is in place for month and never showed problems. Douzends of kernel
compiles and two complete KDE updates (plus gcc and glibc compilations) went without
problems, so I do not believe that it is memory related.

This is a fairly revolting-looking bug. The keyboard problem could be due
to something else sending keventd into a loop - without keventd services it
seems that USB keyboards won't work, but PS/2 will.

Andi, could you please take a look at the NMI messages here? Is this a
misinterpreted NMI watchdog message? I suspect not.

Thanks.

Comment 3 Volker Armin Hemmann 2006-01-17 14:42:56 UTC
Hi,

emm, it is a ps/2 keyboard, a cherry G80-2100

The usb mouse still gets 'something', since the mousepointer is movable in X - with lot of lag
and hangs, so it is not usable at all. But technically, it is 'working'.
Comment 4 Andi Kleen 2006-01-17 18:29:04 UTC
AMD hardware sends NMIs when errors are detected on the PCI/chipset level.
While I don't claim to have seen this particular flavour yet I would
guess something is wrong with either your motherboard or one of the addin
cards (maybe the Adaptec) When the PCI bus is confused this can cause
weird secondary effects too llike USB not working anymore.
Comment 5 Volker Armin Hemmann 2006-01-17 18:39:26 UTC
Hi,

I have the board since the end of september now, without any problems so far. The card
was used on an SiS based Socket A board until then, with the drive, also without problems.
Betwenn september and today, the card rested on some anti-static bag..

Again: it is not the USB bus, which has problems (ok, the mouse is jerky) but the PS/2
keyboard, which is dead.

And while the keyboard is dead and the mouse is jerky, 'something' happens, because the
drives writes onto the tape (at least it makes the sounds like it is writing and moves the
tape) and the harddisk is accessed.

I will check that the card sits correctly, but I did that before closing the case, so I do not
expect, that that is the problem.

Comment 6 Volker Armin Hemmann 2006-01-18 07:53:08 UTC
Hi,

some more news:

I did an dd if=/dev/urandom of=/testfile bs=4M count=1
tar -cf /dev/st0 testfile --totals

and after it finished writing to the tape, it showed the totals.
After a shutdown, I read from the drive with tar -xf /dev/st0 and compared the files.

-reading does not kill the keyboard
-reading does not put any errors in dmesg
-both files, original and from the tape are identical.

So only writing is 'dangerous', ie, kills keyboard, but the data seems to be written correctly.
Comment 7 Volker Armin Hemmann 2006-01-22 16:11:02 UTC
Hi,

I tried SuSE 10 this morning, Kernel 2.6.13-15.

At first, I tried a 20mb file.
In the first seconds of writing, the keyboard still reacted, with some latency, than hanged,
but came back, as soon as writing was finished.
No errors in dmesg!

Reading did not harm the keyboard.

After that I tried to put 24GB on the tape. The keyboard stopped responding after ~30
seconds and did not come back after the writing was finished.

So, the bigger the file, the bigger the harm done.

I'll try with an usb-keyboard in the next days.
Comment 8 Volker Armin Hemmann 2006-01-22 18:18:17 UTC
Hi,
I just did an
tar -tf /dev/st0 > liste

as root on a console and way able to switch back to my kde session before the keyboard
started to misbehave.

mouse worked without any hiccups. The keyboard was not really dead, but it did not react
most of the time, and when it reacted to a key, it was usually stuck.
Luckily, I was able to type by copy&paste single letters with the mouse. Also everything
else was not affected. Everything I could do with the mouse worked, with a normal speed.
Memory sonsumption was normal, network as fast (slow) as allways.
As soon as I did an 'killall -9 tar' the keyboard came back (I am just typing with it) and
worked normally again.

yes, tainted, but in the other comments are the non-tainted versions of the mess.

I would understand, if the access would kill the mouse, same interrupt, but the mouse has
no problems.

Hi,

2.6.16-rc1
not tainted

keyboard (ps/2) worked for the first ~10-30 seconds of backup after that hangend.
Keyboard worked perfectly fine as soon as tar had finished writing ca 18GB of data to the
drive:

Comment 10 Volker Armin Hemmann 2006-01-26 05:21:39 UTC
Hi,

good (strange) news everybody.

I upgraded my bios to 1.5

at first, the result was horrible - the box did not even boot with the tape drive powered, and
it hung again with 2.6.16-rc1-git4

BUT

after the second boot, it started to work perfectly.

No hang at boot, when decompressing the kernel&tape drive powered, no hang of the
keyboard while writing to the drive.

So, it seems, that it was a buggy bios and not the kernel.

Sorry for the noise.

(The only question left for me: why on the second try? But it is only a minor one..)
Comment 11 Natalie Protasevich 2007-07-22 17:18:30 UTC
OK, the bug can be closed then.
Thanks.
Comment 12 Volker Armin Hemmann 2007-07-22 19:00:20 UTC
oh, yes. Certainly. I totally forgot about it :(
I had not have any tape related problems since then - and I am using it regularly....
