Since oss is deprecated you could try alsa (and select oss api emulation if your
apps don't support alsa).

About the bug, there's an interesting comment above that error ac97_codec prints:
"Probing of AC97 in this way is not reliable, it is not even SAFE"
You might have hit this.
Comment 2 Bruce Robson 2006-10-22 21:10:21 UTC
I'm also having the problem of no sound with a 2.6 kernel from a Creative Sound
Blaster sound card..
a) I'm also using Debian linux
b) My sound card is a slightly different model (Creative Sound Blaster 16 PCI)
c) My remaining h/w is very different
    a) single processor (instead of multi processor)
    b) Via chipset (instead of Intel)
    c) Nvidia graphics (instead of S3)
    d) 3Com ethernet adapter (instead of Realtek)
    e) no SCSI (instead Adaptec AHA-2940U2/U2W)

Last July, I logged this in Debian's bugs database as "No sound from Creative
Sound Blaster 16 PCI with 2.6 kernel".
