I would recommend trying the FIX_CAPACITY flag or the MAX_SECTORS_MIN flag.

To get more information about the problem, you should record a usbmon 
trace showing what happens when the device is plugged in.  Instructions 
for usbmon are in the kernel source file Documentation/usb/usbmon.txt.
