Description Joe_Linux 2009-06-23 21:39:02 UTC
I can't get the following card working on an Acer Aspire One Netbook Model ZG8 and Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix.

02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)
	Subsystem: Foxconn International, Inc. Device e00d
	Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 18
	Memory at 54100000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
	Capabilities: <access denied>
	Kernel driver in use: ath5k_pci
	Kernel modules: ath_pci, ath5k

It's unfortunate because if I can't get it to work, I'll have to return the computer to Costco. It's the type of Acer Aspire One Netbooks they sell at the Cdll Phone Kiosk which is different from the standard Acer Aspire One 10" netbooks
Comment 1 Jiri Slaby 2009-06-24 14:15:57 UTC
You seem to use proprietary madwifi blob (report to madwifi).

Please try ath5k. If the problem persists with that driver, append whole dmesg output after unsuccessfull attempt to connect. And describe more thoroughly what exactly doesn't work. Do you manage to see APs in scan results? Are you able to connect, but you see no traffic flow. Do you use encryption, etc.
Comment 2 Joe_Linux 2009-06-24 20:06:56 UTC
I click on the wireless and see no wireless networks at all. Normally I see 4 or more using Ubuntu on a different Laptop. I do have passphrase encryption on my wireless router.

Here is a link to a screen shot of the wireless tool and the hardware driver window along with the dmesg text:

There are some instructions on how to get it to work on various websites. I'm going to try that this afternoon, but the problem is this computer may be used for long periods of time by another member of the family that is not familiar with Linux, particularly the terminal. If I can't get it working easily, I will have to return the computer.

I know the normal Acer 10" netbook works okay out of the box. I like this particular computer because it was thiner, lighter, had a nicer touchpad, and better layout of the USB ports. However this wireless problem is looking like a deal breaker as I don't use the anti-competitive monopoly OS.

I tried to update my system using the Ubuntu instructions found here:

http://ubuntumanual.org/posts/185/install-atheros-ar242x-802-11abg-wireless-driver-in-ubuntu

Everything went well except for the fact that it still doesn't work. After this attempt, I was forced to log into Windows which I was never going to use just to check if the card works in Windows, which it does. However since I don't want to use Windows, I need to find a solution in Linux or return the computer.
Comment 5 Joe_Linux 2009-06-25 12:52:25 UTC
I just learned that the computer that works has the same AR242x card as the one that doesn't. The one that works is a Compaq Presario CQ60, and the one that doesn't is an Acer Aspire One ZG8 netbook.

Here's a new dmesg.txt which I captured after I put ath5k in /etc/modules and commented out #ath_pci

From what I get out of it, it assumes the commputer is out of range, put I've had the computer right next to the router and it doesn't work. I know that the standard Acer Aspire One does work, but I don't know what kinnd of card it had. What's different about the Acer Aspire One ZG8 is that it also has a wireless broadband card. I wonder if that is causing some sort of conflict? But as I said, the AR242x does work with the anti-competitive monopoly OS.

This means you were associated for 6 minutes, then the card stopped receiving beacons (for whatever reason) from the AP.

Was you able to use the connection for those 6 mins?
Comment 8 Jiri Slaby 2009-06-28 14:14:06 UTC
And also could you try upgrading to 2.6.30?
Comment 9 Joe_Linux 2009-06-28 18:25:42 UTC
As far as I know it never worked. Are there any commands i could run that
would shed more light on the situation?

I'll try the newer kernel. I'm not sure how to upgrade the kernel in Ubuntu

I don't know how to upgrade to the 2.6.30 kernel

Me neither, but I saw 2.6.30 in ubuntu repos, so I suppose there is a way. At last you can upgrade manually...
Comment 13 Joe_Linux 2009-07-03 00:04:09 UTC
I installed the 2.6.30 kernel, but the wireless still doesn't work. It
looks like I will have to return the computer to the Costco. It's too bad
because in my opinion, this is the nicest 10" Acer Netbook on the market
today.

Appended is another dmesg if that might help:

There is a huge blank space before the dmesg output above. I don't know how to edit it out.

Hey, but you found a network!

Is the columbiaplace the AP you try to connect to? If yes, could you stop network manager, all running wpa_supplicants, put this into /tmp/wpa:
network={
        ssid="ColumbiaPlace"
        scan_ssid=1
        key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
        psk="your_passwd"
}
and run:
/usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant -c /tmp/wpa -Dwext -iwlan0 -d
Comment 16 Joe_Linux 2009-07-03 14:01:35 UTC
jl@jl-acer:~$ sudo /usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant -c /tmp/wpa -Dwext -iwlan0 -d
[sudo] password for jl:
sudo: /usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant: command not found
jl@jl-acer:~$

Inside of the directory /tmp, I have a file named "wpa" which includes the
following:

network={
       ssid="ColumbiaPlace"
       scan_ssid=1
       key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
       psk="MyActualPassword"
}

The wpa_gui says:
Status: Could not get status from wpa_supplicant

Ubuntu System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers sayon ths:

"No proprietary drivers on this system"

I will reboot and see if anything changes. But if this did work, how would
I adress adhoc wireless? Plus the system needs to work through a GUI for
average users.

Comment 17 Joe_Linux 2009-07-03 14:17:10 UTC
Upon reboot the results are zero

wpa-gui gets nothing from wpa_supplicants, and the Ubuntu network status
indicator is all blank unless an ethernet cable is hooked up.

I know on the standare Acer One Netbook it all works right out of the box.
This has a 3G network inaddition to the wireless, and I suppose that is
screwing things up. Apparently this is just another piece of hardware that
doesn't work with Linux.

I'm wondering if I should do a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04 and change
nothing but the kernel and see if that would work?

Aha, OK, try without /usr prefix. It's in /sbin on ubuntu.

> The wpa_gui says:

It won't work, since you start supplicant without control iface.
