kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds

Software Environment:

ext3 fs,
Problem Description:

Encountered this after FC10 automount the partition (ext3):

kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds
EXT3 FS on sdf1, internal journal
EXT3-fs: recovery complete.
EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds
EXT3 FS on sdf4, internal journal
EXT3-fs: recovery complete.
EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds
EXT3 FS on sdf2, internal journal
EXT3-fs: recovery complete.
EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
ext3_abort called.
EXT3-fs error (device sde1): ext3_journal_start_sb: Detected aborted journal
Remounting filesystem read-only
ext3_abort called.
EXT3-fs error (device sde1): ext3_put_super: Couldn't clean up the journal

As shown above, at first it was mounted as /dev/sde, but subsequently it errored, umount automatically, and remount again (all done by FC10.....happened without my control) as sdf:

/dev/sdf4 40631988 29915736 8618968 78% /media/_1
/dev/sdf5 14659280 14656544 2736 100% /media/disk-1
/dev/sdf2 38448304 20934324 15560880 58% /media/disk-2
/dev/sdf1 39381744 14880908 22500344 40% /media/disk

Repeatable or not cannot say, but done it thrice and seemingly happened three times (mount and ls repeated).

Other symptoms:

etc.

Can you attach the chunk of /var/log/messages from that point as an attachment to this bug

The /var/log/messages are as follows:

(COmments: hardware pluggin at about 16:45hours, and noticed the autoremounting at about 17:05hours, no pluging out of harddisk done, physical removal preceded by umounting was finally done at 17:22hours)

This seems like a problem with your USB drive (or motherboard having too weak USB controller to power the drive or something like that). Because the drive disconnects after being mounted and later also gives IO errors. See:

Mar 20 16:45:57 usb 1-6: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Mar 20 16:45:57 localhost kernel: scsi9 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Mar 20 16:46:02 localhost kernel: scsi 9:0:0:0: Direct-Access WD
1600BEAExternal 1.02 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
Mar 20 16:46:02 localhost kernel: sd 9:0:0:0: [sde] 312581808 512-byte hardware
sectors: (160 GB/149 GiB)
...
Mar 20 16:46:04 localhost kernel: EXT3 FS on sde1, internal journal
...
Mar 20 16:46:47 localhost kernel: usb 1-6: USB disconnect, address 4
...
Mar 20 16:47:00 localhost kernel: EXT3-fs error (device sde1):
ext3_get_inode_loc: unable to read inode block - inode=2, block=1027
Mar 20 16:47:00 localhost kernel: EXT3-fs error (device sde1) in
ext3_reserve_inode_write: IO failure
...
And there are more IO errors because the drive then reconnects, gets sdf assigned but disconnects again. Anyway, this is either USB stack or HW problem. If you see it only with some kernel and not with other, it might be worth pursuing further. Otherwise I'd try to play with HW...

If you can please try the device plugged through a powered USB hub
Comment 5 Peter Teoh 2009-03-30 02:57:36 UTC
Yes, it is confirmed as hardware error. This is because after I reconnect to another USB port at the back of the PC (which is less filmsy, as compared with the front USB, which is rather shaky), recursive "ls -xptR' gave me absolutely no error or disconnecting/reconnecting.

I would like to close this, AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL THE FABULOUS SUPPORT!!!!
