Description Marco Giglio 2008-12-02 15:36:06 UTC
Distribution: Debian Lenny
Hardware Environment: Sony Vaio VGN-FZ38M
Problem Description: My cd/dvd/blu-ray drive "Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500A" can't read any audio cd and the system recognizes them as empty cds. The drive read other cds, but I don't know if it can read dvds or blu-ray disc because I hadn't the chance to try.
I apologize for possible mistakes with english.

Steps to reproduce: place an audio cd in the drive
Comment 1 Andrew Morton 2008-12-02 15:47:16 UTC
Which device driver is being used to control that drive?

Please attach the output of `dmesg -s 1000000' to this report, thanks.
Comment 2 Jiri Kosina 2008-12-03 02:16:49 UTC
drivers_input-devices is not a proper asignee for problems with DVD readers, could you please reassign? Thanks.
Comment 3 Marco Giglio 2008-12-03 08:54:12 UTC
Sorry, but how should I reassign it? I don't find anything appropriate
There's the output of dmesg -s 1000000

Comment 4 Borislav Petkov 2008-12-04 06:40:23 UTC
Hi,

here's what you could do for now:

1. Try a kernel without the proprietary nvidia module. I want to rule out the distant possibility of it interfering
2. Try a recent kernel since a lot changed in ide-cd in the 2.6.26..2.6.27 timeframe

also what does

cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info

say?

Thanks,
Boris.
Comment 5 Marco Giglio 2008-12-04 09:13:35 UTC
I'll try with other kernels next week, hoping they'll work.

... or you can simply try the attached patch against stock 2.6.27. I'm pretty sure it'll fix your problem :).

Thanks,
Boris.

Comment 8 Marco Giglio 2008-12-14 11:11:20 UTC
Well, i've installed the 2.6.27.7 kernel without the nvidia module (i think and hope it's because of this that it's impossible to start the x server...) but when i try to play audio cds the output is: "ioctl cdromplaymsf: Operation not supported"
I noticed some differences between the output of "cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info" in the old and in the new kernel. In kernel 2.6.27.7 "Drive name" is sr.0 and "Can play audio" is set to 1. However "Can select disk" is set to 0.
I hope that can help.

PS- i haven't tried the patch. Should I?
Comment 9 Borislav Petkov 2008-12-14 13:16:59 UTC
This happens because the scsi cdrom driver (sr) is registering with the cdrom.

Can you play audio with that driver?

Regards,
Boris.
Comment 10 Marco Giglio 2008-12-14 15:27:04 UTC
Sorry, maybe I misunderstood you.
I'm not able to play any audio cd in kernel 2.6.27.7 too. The output of "cdplay /dev/hda" is "cdplay: ioctl cdromplaymsf: Operation not
supported".
The module of scsi-cdrom is loaded.
What do you suggest?
Comment 11 Borislav Petkov 2008-12-14 22:13:32 UTC
Hi,

hm, that's strange. Normally, if "Can play audio" is set, you should be able to do that and according to, e.g. http://www.sony-optiarc.eu/en/exhibits/slim-line-drives/bc-5500a, your hardware is capable of playing audio. Well, you could try my patch to see if it fixes your problem with ide-cd. However, make sure not to load scsi-cdrom but the ide_cd_mod module.

Thanks,
Boris.

Thanks.

You're using libata ata_piix driver in 2.6.27.7 and IDE piix one in 2.6.26-1.

To try Borislav's patch you need to use IDE piix host driver and ide-cd device driver.
Comment 19 Marco Giglio 2008-12-18 07:24:11 UTC
Sorry, but I don't know how to do that. Could you explain me that, please?
Comment 20 Borislav Petkov 2008-12-18 07:45:35 UTC
Hi,

you need to disable the loading of the ata_piix.ko kernel module for the 2.6.27 kernel you're going to test the patch with. If you still don't know what to do, just reconfigure your kernel by issuing:

make menuconfig

in the kernel sources, then go to "Device Drivers" -> "Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers" and disable the menu point "Intel ESB, ICH, PIIX3, PIIX4 PATA/SATA support" and then apply the patch, recompile your kernel, install it and reboot the machine.

Regards,
Boris.
Comment 21 Marco Giglio 2008-12-18 10:07:20 UTC
I suppose I had to do just a rmmod ata_piix, but anyway, I did how you said and I had recompiled my kernel.

thanks for testing. It seems that your drive really can't playing audio. Please revert the old patch I sent you and try this next one - it asks the drive whether it supports play audio commands. Then do send me the whole dmesg boot log.

Hi,

Thanks, hope your holidays were happy too! Ok, well, I'm afraid that we'll have to trace the driver to see exactly what happens. Here's how:

1. Apply the attached big debug patch + whitelist entry for your drive in the quirks list ontop of the last audio ops patch
2. Build your kernel, reboot the machine (here you'll see lots of output whizzing by)
3. Send me the whole boot log (I assume dmesg output will be truncated so you can cut it from /var/log/syslog instead, since you're using a debian system)

Thanks for your debugging help so far :).

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what did you mean with "whitelist entry for your drive". I've just added the new patch ontop of the previous one, but I think it's wrong because the outputs during the boot were not so much (I'm sorry for my short knowledge of english and linux).
However that is the boot log.

Wait a minute. It's quite likely that the drive in fact cannot play audio in the way you're trying to make it. Modern systems don't normally play audio in this way anymore, this requires an analog audio output from the drive into the sound hardware which is unlikely on a laptop. In Windows Media Player, etc. when you insert an audio CD it's actually digitally extracting the audio from the disc and playing it, which does not involve the "play audio" command. I'm sure there is some media player software in Linux which will do the same.

Hi,

yep, that might be the reason, thanks Robert. Marco, can you try playing audio with another player which can "Use direct digital playback" - at least this is how the option is called in kscd's settings (KDE) I tried here.

Thanks.

Robert, you were right!
I have installed NVIDIA driver in 2.6.27.7 kernel patched with Borislav's patch and when I have started gnome, soundjuicer started to play the cd!
I've noticed that is slower than Windows Media Player and there are some errors during the reproduction, but it's a great success for me.
Thanks Borislav, Robert and Bartlomiej!
