Details

Description real name 2008-10-27 07:24:03 UTC
Latest working kernel version: 2.6.18.2 (opensuse 10.2 release)
Earliest failing kernel version: 2.6.22.5 (opensuse 10.3 release)
Distribution: opensuse 11.1
Hardware Environment: gigabyte mainboard ga-g21mf-s1, intel g31 express chipset, intel ich7 southbridge
Software Environment: opensuse kernels booting
Problem Description:

i have already create quite an extensive and detailed bugreport over at the opensuse/novell bugzilla, but they asked me to file another bugreport here too. please check: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=434618

you will find extensive log information about (partly) booting/crashing opensuse versions 10.2, 10.3 11.0 and so on.. up til 11.1 beta2 and beta3 info stuff and also some "screenshots".

i needed to upload the opensuse 11.1 beta3 "screenshots" onto an imagehosting site, as the opensuse 11.1 beta3 wouldnt really boot with any sort of storage subsystem devices present and i couldnt copy the log/bootup messages but needed to take pictures of the screen.

unfortunately i didnt really find any imagehoster that would make it possible to easily create a simple gallery out of my archived pictures, there was only this adult/mature hoster available, but i uploaded it into the non-adult area of course, but if you will surf the site, you will most likely to encounter adult/mature content banners, advertisements and content. beware ;)
here is the link to all the pictures, also the mainboards bios showing the two settings of the chipset shared video memory settings.
<http://www.imagefap.com/gallery.php?gid=1370379&view=0>

opensuse 11.1 beta3 (kernel 2.6.27.1) wont boot properly and gives agpintel-gart crash when being used with the small shared video ram (1+1megabytes). no agpintel-gart problem is being reported when being set to 1+8megabyte setting in the gigabyte bios settings.

Steps to reproduce:
see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=434618

use the board/chipset with smallest possible chipset shared video memory settings and try to boot up current opensuse releases and current linux kernels.

thanks for listening.
regards.

managed to snatch some real boot.msg data some other way from a booting opensuse 11.1 beta3 system with shared video framebuffer set to small (1+1megabytes settings in gigabytes board bios):

OK, thanks.

David: intel_i915_configure() oopsed, and it's a regression.
Comment 4 Roland Kletzing 2008-11-22 08:59:28 UTC
not sure, but is this one
http://marc.info/?l=linux-kernel&m=122595443123449&w=2

related here?

as the reporter is using 2.6.27.1-2-pae , may it be worth giving advice to try non-pae kernel to see if it makes a difference ?

iirc, suse had switched default distro kernel to pae kernel, so even <4gb systems can use cpu nx feature.
Comment 5 Gordon Jin 2009-09-18 02:47:15 UTC
Does this issue still exist?
Comment 6 Jeff Mahoney 2009-11-24 16:25:18 UTC
I believe this may be a duplicate of bug #12539, which has been fixed.
Comment 7 Chris Wilson 2010-07-24 09:32:51 UTC
Indeed, same bug resulting from slightly different input parameters.
