Is the touchpad identified as Synaptics by other operating systems or earlier kernels (never trust tpconfig utility on 2.6 kernels - it does not actually have access to the hardware)? Does the touchpad behavior improve if you add "options psmouse proto=imps" to /etc/modprobe.conf? The touchpad worked fine under ubuntu 6.04 for a long time, so I assume it was identified correctly, but with the update to ubuntu 7.04 it started acting strangely. I have tried the latest debian OS, and the current ubuntu 6.04 live cd, but the mouse behaves exactly the same, which is why I suspect the kernel driver to be the culprit. I have not tried Windows on it, but I have had it confirmed from the system builder (it is a MSI barebook-based thing from the largest Norwegian system builder, which is really small but that only means purely standard components...) that the touchpad is in fact a Synaptics touchpad. Maybe you ask in order to rule out hardware defects, which is always a possibility, I suppose. Loading the module with the options you suggested did not do anything for the behaviour of the touchpad. The only difference is that it is now identified as a Generic Wheel Mouse rather than a Logitech Wheel Mouse. All the best, K. Copuld you please try compiling 2.6.16 through 2.6.20 kernels to figure out which one broke the touchpad detection? Btw, tale a look at 8781 (also an MSI laptop). Are you sure it is Synaptics and not Elantech touchpad? I asked the system builder what kind of touchpad was in there (i.e. I did not ask "Is it a Synaptics touchpad?"), and they said it is synaptics. Would you like me to disassemble the laptop to make absolutely sure? Please try to locate which kernel after 2.6.20 broke the touchpad detection so I could start looking close at the changes. Thank you. I will. I know the principles of kernel configuration and compilation, but I haven't tested different kernels like this before, so I have to wait until I have some time on my hand. I'm finishing my doctoral dissertation at the moment, you see...
