Description Jure Repinc 2006-07-16 04:34:08 UTC
Most recent kernel where this bug did not occur: 2.6.17.5
Distribution: Gentoo Linux
Hardware Environment: HP Compaq nx6125 laptop with AMD Turion 64
Problem Description:
After some time while running with 2.6.18-rc1 my laptop just freezes. All is OK
with 2.6.17.5. I don't know what us causing this. It can also happen if I leave
the laptop alone and don't even work on it. What can I do to help find the part
that is causing this. How can I get some usefull log or output when the system
is frozen?

Steps to reproduce:
1. Power up the laptop with 2.6.18-rc1
2. Use it or leave it for some time
3. See it freeze

I just tried with RC4 and the freeze still happens.

I had a similar problem, but it seems to have gone away for the moment.

Are you using the ndiswrapper drive by any chance ?

Taking a look at the 2.6.17 -> 2.6.18-rc1 change log shows about 4 or 6 patches
that effect the x86_64 memory management code, and could be the cause of this
bug. If i get time, i'll try bisecting these patches to see which ones cause the
lockup.

I only use ndiswrapper with stable kernel. When testing I use bcm43xx driver
that is in the kernel.

I am seeing this too on a Gentoo laptop with vanilla 2.6.18.1. I am not using
the ndiswrapper but Prism54, so I guess that's not the problem.

Is the problem still happening with recent kernels? If so, can you clarify: does it happen after power save mode? You can also check for errors in /var/log/messages.
Thanks.

Currently I'm running kernel 2.6.22.3 and don't get the freezes anymore.
