Description Jack Lau 2009-08-05 18:44:46 UTC
I have recently assembled a Linux server and router (no GUI) where I am using an Atheros AR9160 controller (Sparklan WMIA-268N) as an access point. I am using Ubuntu 9.04 jaunty release (default kernel 2.6.28-14-generic) but using hostapd 0.69 from the upcoming 9.10 karmic release because the one that comes with jaunty does not support nl80211.

The problem is that I am constantly getting kernel panics, each time of the same error kernel panic ieee80211_agg_splice_packets.

I have also tried many compat-wireless releases including 2.6.31-rc*, daily builds and many other kernels including 2.6.31-* all to no avail, even the latest one doesn't fix the problem.

My easiest way to reproduce the problem is to surf the web using my Windows notebook, turn wifi off using the button so that it is suddenly disconnected without de-authenticating (turning wifi off whilst the wifi light is still blinking increases the chance of this crash), turning wifi back on and then surfing the web and this kernel panic comes just about every time. The notebook is fitted with an Intel 4965AGN in 802.11n mode where I have used both XP and Vista.

I have started reporting the bug in the mailing list over 2 weeks ago so there will be many copies of log files saved over there at http://marc.info/?t=124863015500005&r=1&w=2 where there is quite a lot of information of what I have done.

I also enclose the hostapd configuration file, an Ubuntu network configuration file, initial photos of the crash, many log files from hostapd, mac80211, ath9k and kernel panics. The logs were taken at different times, different kernels, different configurations, different debug setups, etc.

Please note that although I am into Linux, I am very weak at programming.

I am not very good at explaining things so if you need more information, please reply but please explain things clearly as I don't always understand things when they are not so clear.

Comment 2 Luis Chamberlain 2009-08-05 19:34:50 UTC
Can you just add the panic in question here? I saw you e-mail thread and saw no panic at all.
Comment 3 Jack Lau 2009-08-06 18:06:31 UTC
This is a kernel panic dump from Ubuntu 2.6.28-14-server via netconsole with compat-wireless 2.6.30 installed which are both "stable" releases (not).

Thanks, can you please try 2.6.30 vanilla off of kernel.org?

http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.30.4.tar.bz2

This probably is a valid oops on 2.6.30 but just want to make sure the issue has nothing to do with the backport effort.
Comment 5 Luis Chamberlain 2009-08-06 18:13:02 UTC
Also please run gdb net/mac80211/mac80211.ko off of the mac80211.ko for your compat-wireless modules. That should be in /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/updates/net/mac80211/mac80211.ko

Then use:

l *(ieee80211_agg_splice_packets+0x3d)

And paste the output here.

How do I compile compat-wireless with debugging symbols? I can't see anything obvious in config.mk. All I get is no debugging symbols found. I am really am an idiot with programming.

I have also tried http://packages.debian.org/sid/linux-image-2.6.30-1-686 from Debian, http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/linux-image-2.6.31-5-generic from Ubuntu both without backports and even the bleeding edge wireless-testing from yesterday, all crashing with the same error.

I will also try 2.6.30.4 tommorow.
Comment 8 Luis Chamberlain 2009-08-06 18:50:05 UTC
Compile your kernel with debugging symbols. The debugging stuff should be followed on compat-wireless from your current kernel.

The output is from the 2.6.30.4 kernel with no backports installed.

This is good. Now can you please try the same with wireless-testing directly?

http://wireless.kernel.org/en/developers/Documentation/git-guide

I'd like to see if you can reproduce this panic with the wireless-testing kernel so we can fix it there and then propagate the changes down to older kernels.

If you do see an oops please use gdb as well for the EIP as you did for 2.6.30.4.

Do not splice TID queue unless its set

Please try this patch, also please be sure to enable:

CONFIG_MAC80211_HT_DEBUG=y

and provide the logs.
Comment 14 Jack Lau 2009-08-11 18:30:25 UTC
I have updated my git to the latest master-2009-08-10, applied the patch, enabled HT debug, compiled and installed. I am now pleased that the crash has now been resolved.

However, I am not seeing the message "TID %d gone but expected when splicing aggregates from the pending queue" when the crash would be happening. My guess is because of the return statement just above the code to print the message.

Here is the output of the whole boot session (I have changed the MAC addresses for privacy reasons).

Comment 15 Luis Chamberlain 2009-08-11 18:36:43 UTC
The fact that you do not see it is a good thing. It means that my suspicion that a splice was trying to be generated even when HT_ADDBA_REQUESTED_MSK was not set was true. How that happens is a mystery to me still, I reviewed this and was unable to see how it happens.

I'll send this in for now to cure your pains.

Thanks for testing and reporting this.

Thank you very much.
Comment 17 Luis Chamberlain 2009-08-11 20:05:55 UTC
Can someone please close this bug report? I've submitted this upstream now.
Comment 18 Luis Chamberlain 2009-08-11 20:33:39 UTC
Thanks Jack, but it is still not closed.
