Bug 11453

Summary: Missing support for RTL8101 Ethernet chip (failure of r8169 kernel module)
Product: Drivers Reporter: Hadmut Danisch (hadmut)
Component: NetworkAssignee: Francois Romieu (romieu)
Status: RESOLVED UNREPRODUCIBLE
Severity: normal
Priority: P1
Hardware: All
OS: Linux
Kernel Version: 2.6.27 (ubuntu 2.6.27-2-generic) Subsystem:
Regression: No Bisected commit-id:

Description Hadmut Danisch 2008-08-29 13:07:20 UTC
Latest working kernel version: never
Earliest failing kernel version:
Distribution: ubuntu 8.10 (intrepid)
Hardware Environment: Toshiba Notebook with RTL 8101 ethernet chip
Software Environment:
Problem Description:

When inserting the r8169 driver, a eth0 device appears and is configurable, just as a working device, except for the fact that it does not receive anything.

Observation 1: When rebooting 2.6.24 into 2.6.27, the machine crashes before getting into a single user shell. It however works when switching the machine's power off and on before going into 2.6.27

Observation 2: When rebooting from 2.6.27 into 2.6.24 with a self compiled 8101 driver, it does not work either, but plugging the ethernet cable out and in it helps.

It looks as if there is a problem with turning the receiver and the loop current on and off.

regards
